| ) | i | SAY NO to the Median Extension Across Klickitat St. at 33rd Ave. btip:/ /wwyjmimoblemnet/portiand /klicitat-greanwvay.htm! What this is about: The Northeast Klickitat Greenway Project proposes to dose off left-hand ‘turns from 38rd onto Klickitat and from Klickitat onto 33rd by extending the center median so it cannot be crossed except by bicycles and pedestrians. Why this won't work: ‘Traffic on Klickitat St. is not the problem. Traffic on 33rd Ave. not stopping is what keeps cyclists and pedestrians from crossing safely. Why this is bad for residents: + Right-tumn only onto and off of NE 33rd Ave. significantly limits access by residents, especially those who live on Klickitat near 33rd. The exit-only curb extension at 35th ‘Ave. is sufficient to limit traffic flow on Klickitat east of 33rd. + Insnowy or icy conditions, some residents would only be able to exit their block of Klickitat St. by going uphill on 33rd, or uphill to 35th. + Due to the exit-only curb extension at 35th, some residents could only access Klickitat from one direction - driving northbound on 33rd. What would work better: «Keep the existing islands and center left-turn lane. + Puta pedestrian and bicyclist activated traffic signal at the intersection between Klickitat and 33rd, similar to the one on 33rd at NE Mason next to Wilshire Park. + Synchronize the traffic signal with the existing signal one block north at Fremont and 33rd, 00 that traffic flow is not inhibited. # Why this would work better: + Addresses traffic not stopping for pedestrians and bicycles crossing 33rd. + Allows residents to access our homes from both northbound and southbound. + Does not cause congestion on NE 33rd by removing center left-turn lane, What to do: + IMMEDIATELY CALL or email Kyle Chisek, Project Manager at the Portland Bureau of Transportation. Email: kyle,chisek@portlandoregon.gov, Phone: 503-823-7041. Tell Kyle why the median extension on NE 33rd Ave. at Klickitat is a bad idea. Tell Kyle what would work better, and why. Ifyou wish, call or email Mayor Sam Adams’ office and tell them the same thing. ATTEND the next Klickitat Greenway Project Meeting on Thursday, May 6, 2010 at 6pm, at the Alameda Elementary School Cafeteria.
